Schedule
Overview
A one day conference entitled "Emerging Technology Day" was sponsored by the Colorado Homeland Defense Alliance (CHDA) and hosted by the National Homeland Defense Foundation (NHDF) on October 27, 2008, in conjunction with the annual Homeland Defense / Homeland Security Symposium. This no-fee conference was open to the general public and was held in Broadmoor Hall at the Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
As threats to the internal security of the United States and its allies increase, it is becoming even more important to develop innovative ways of countering these threats. Because threats increase in capability as our defenses increase, there is always a need to develop new defensive options. Many government organizations, including the US Department of Homeland Security, Defense R&D Canada, North American Aerospace Defense Command/ US Northern Command and state level offices have designated new or improved capabilities they believe are needed to defend our nations and states. Two such lists or capabilities are easily available from the US Department of Homeland Security and the Colorado Office of Homeland Security.
There are also many universities and small companies who have developed new, innovative technologies which can eventually be matured to meet many of the already identified needs for homeland security and defense. The problems of maturing these "emerging technologies" often include access to potential users - someone who cares - and access to funding, usually relatively modest amounts, to mature their ideas to the point they can be applied. Bridging this gap is one of the missions of CHDA and was the reason for holding this "Emerging Technology Day".
The conference will feature presentations on "Bridging the Gap Between HS/HD Needs and Your Emerging Technology". Presentations from various government agencies will identify technology capabilities they have identified as high priority for Homeland Security/ Defense, and some ways to pursue business opportunities with them to mature these emerging technologies. Invited government agencies include The Homeland Security Advanced Research Project Agency (HSARPA), The Colorado Governors Office of Homeland Security, North American Aerospace Defense Command/ US Northern Command, and Defense R&D Canada. Experts on Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer programs (SBIR/STTR) will participate as well as experts on how to do business with state governments.
There was a working lunch, during which time innovative technology concepts were presented as displays by invited technology developers and discussed with conference attendees. This was an exciting time for viewing some of the latest and greatest new technology ideas related to homeland security and defense needs.
